My wife brought home some sunflowers about a week ago. Their heads are starting to droop a little so I thought I 'd better paint them before they wilted completely. I'm not much for painting flowers but hey...what the heck. It's something I can do in the studio while sitting next to the fire. I'm turning into an old dog who just wants to lay by the fire when the weather turns cold. By the way..... I hope you know you can click on these images to see a larger version.

She's been at it for a long, long time and is well respected in the art world. While I was watering her and husband Mike's garden last week I picked up a couple of Asian pears that had dropped from their tree. Delicious! and beautiful. They actually have little spots all over them which I didn't add here but I liked this as it is so...

Okay... I'm back painting. I saw some 60's style art a few days ago and it reminded me that I really enjoyed painting in a more contemporary style. I used to paint a lot of pots and other vessels in this more fun style. Some of it borrowed from Michele Russo's way of painting...a bit primative and stick-like with lots of angles, and a little from my friend Carol Riley's style ( I got to water her greenhouse and garden last week while she was in France and Forence). Carol always tips and tilts her subjects giving some animation to the piece. She's a great colorist and all of her pieces make people happy.

Apple Orchard

I still have no new paintings happening and I don't know why I posted this old one except I like it! Apple blossoms drifting to the ground I remember painting this and I really liked the effect of the white blossoms at the time.

There is an old movie..one of the 2001 series maybe it is 2010. If I remember correctly there is some unexplained alarming change in the universe that appears to be bad.... but the calm voice (of the computer I think it was) tells the space traveler ....   'something wonderful is happening'....

A new world was coming into existence.

Something wonderful is taking place in my life right now. I hope to start sharing some of it on this blog along with new paintings soon.

Free At Last

This is a sculpture I did about the same time as the painting below. I must have been feeling liberated. Looking back it seems odd that I used the female figure to express the thought. Hmmmm.... This little piece had adjustable arms and legs  so you could pose her any way you liked. Yes... that's a book she's emerging from.

Into The Sun

when all else fails..go fishing

I'm out of ideas. Painting every day just for exercise seems pointless some days. I would like to get really inspired and sink my teeth into something. These two shots are me surf fishing in front of my house. I'm the one on the left in the 1st shot. I would like to use these as a starting point for a nice painting but the sky was so overcast that day that there is very little color or dramatic light captured. 

I guess I'll get going on something and see what happens.

The Arrow II

I'm done ( I think) though now that it's posted I want to go back and tone down the lettering on the deck a little.

Anyway,  this old tug  carries the  pilot to and from the large cargo ships after they cross the bar at the mouth of the Columbia river. The pilots are  put on board to take the ships upriver to Portland from Astoria.

This was a super calm day on the river... wonderful green water around the dock. Not too many years ago the port replaced the old wooden pilings with these steele ones which rust to this orange color. Perfect for punching up this shot.

The Earnest

I happened to catch this working tug tied up at a seafood market about a week ago in Astoria. Snapped a couple shots and though it was taken with my  son's cell phone,  I had enough to go on. This is done mainly with the palette knife. I like doing it that way. Keeps me from getting too bogged down in details and I can just go for it.

after doing the last two paintings  I decided to try the same scene on a much smaller scale with no deadline or expectant client. This little piece is the result. Then ,this morning I started another larger piece, 24x28". I'll post it tomorrow if I get it done.

 I've played with them too long but I think I'm satisfied. so now it's off to Portland to deliver them to the Gallery.

No daily paintings right now. I'm working on 2 pieces for a gallery.Both larger works..40x30" and 30x30"

The gallery has asked to have these two older paintings of mine used as inspiration for two new ones. I don't like to duplicate but I think I can have fun doing new versions of these two scenes. One is from my front yard and the other is about 3 miles south of here.
