Thick impasto laid on with a palette knife.This is much more about composition than subject but since I've been painting boats so much lately I have used them here as geometric shapes.

Very simple and understated, this one (like the preceding one) is much like a preliminary for a woodcut. There is something to be said for working flat like this. Letting the image be very two dimensional. Some would argue that since the  format of painting is two dimensional, then it follows that that  IS the language of painting and you should let it be so. I just like to work this way. I used to do a lot of woodcuts after the Japanese tradition. Though the Japanese woodcuts(or block prints) often had a lot going on in them, they still maintained a simplicity in line and composition and always celebrated the two dimensional limit.

I just don't feel like doing any more of the style I've been working on. The little daily cute things are  more realistic than I want and while it has been nice to explore realism,  this is the style I began my carer with.  I think I'll explore this a little more for now.

Finally some progress! I've been working on larger pieces and a few small ones that have been throw-aways. I thought I might never get another painting done so I'm relieved to have produced this. The weather here is gray and rainy so this happy,sunny looking guy is good for the soul.

And yet another boat. What can I say...I like 'em. Clients like 'em. Believe it or not it's somewhat of a challenge to make water look right. And the lines of a boat are tricky. Here's another larger piece I've been working on. Couldn't come up with a catchy title this time.  Most of these larger ones are all palette knife. Much more fun for me that way. Maybe it's the sculptor in me that likes to move the thicker paint around with a blade. I like the spontaneity that comes with broad strokes. And the inability to do minute detail with a big blade helps keep it loose as opposed to overworked.

This is not a good photo of this piece.Too dark! But until I can light it better, you can at least see what I've been working on. As you can see by the dimensions above, this is a larger scale one. And it can't be appreciated in such a small reproduction. It is much more the sort of painting I like to do and different than the little dailies. I can't get the bolder, more abstract quality in my small pieces and also I don't feel the tiny format of  a 6x6inch painting lends itself well to things like this.  I think the small ones fill my need to do something more toward realism. I'll take a better shot of this and put it on my website later.

It's that time of year again. Fall is creeping up and the blackberries are out. This was a good time to paint them because they are not all ripe so I could capture them in all stages and colors.

There was a sense of style in the 50's that played off of the space race and sputnik and things like that. (if you don't know what Sputnik was, that just means you're not old). Personally I liked it and still do. A lot of flair! Cars had wings and angles. And chrome was king! Signs too, had lots of flair. This is a classic.
